The play’s the thing

We are delighted to partner with the park district’s Big Deal Productions for the first time ever to present a play based on Lois Lowry’s Number the Stars. This novel was chosen as a Newbery Medal winner in 1990 for its distinguished contribution to American children’s literature.

For those unfamiliar with the story, it begins during Nazi occupied Denmark in 1943. The novel centers on ten-year-old Annemarie Johansen and her best friend, Ellen Rosen. When the Johansens learn of Nazi deportation plans for the Danish Jews, they readily agree to take in Ellen and pretend she is Annemarie’s sister. The story then follows the Johansen family’s role in the Danish resistance efforts to transfer the Rosens as well as other Jewish citizens to the safety of Sweden. It is an impressive example of bravery and doing the right thing in the face of overwhelming odds and danger.

Inspired by the story, the museum will also be featuring a flat-panel exhibit about local figures that changed history by acting in ethical or tolerant manners.  It will be up through the duration of the production and moved into the main gallery afterward.

You can’t miss this! Performances are scheduled for just one week only. Shows are April 28-30 at 7 PM and April 30 and May 1 at 2 PM in the lower gallery at the museum. Tickets will be available at the museum as well as through Big Deal Productions. For more information visit the Buffalo Grove Park District website http://www.bgparkdistrict.org/pr_performing.htm.
